A happy New Year in Adelaide

Adelaide will always hold a special place in my heart. I grew up in the South Australian capital before moving across to Victoria in 2013. If you know me you know how parochial I am towards my home city. But what’s not to love about beautiful beaches, rolling hills, award-winning wine country and the best stadium in Australia?

While I can talk Adelaide up until the cows come home nothing beats spending time with family and friends. So it goes without saying that Jason and I always make the effort to drive over around the New Year period.

Our holidays officially began at Port Willunga beach on Christmas Eve. This little slice of paradise features a stunning strip of white sand surrounded by crystal-clear ocean and a bright-yellow sandstone cliff face. The best thing? It’s only about 45 minutes from the city straight through on the southern expressway.

A moody Mother Nature greeted me on a morning spent at Henley Beach as I caught up with some of my cousins. I can highly recommend the hotcakes at Malobo, with a side of Adelaide celeb spotting.

One overcast day we barbecued and swam at my Aunty and Uncle’s, a picturesque estate in Oakbank, in the Adelaide Hills. We also shared a trip to the soccer with them at Hindmarsh Stadium to cheer on our team Adelaide United.

New Year’s Eve was spent soaking up some sun at Grange Beach before we devoured the best fish and chips in Adelaide from Sotos at Semaphore. Trust me, the line out the door is worth the wait! This family business has mastered the art of the perfect hot chip, with each hand-cut  slice of potato embodying just the right amount of crunch and softness.

That night we headed into Adelaide Oval for the annual New Year’s Eve Big Bash match. Afterwards, we were also treated to a special viewing of the city’s fireworks, which capped off an Adelaide Strikers win perfectly!

For now our holidays are over and we’re both back into the swing of work and life in Melbourne, however we are counting down to our return to South Australia for the Tour Down Under in just over a week’s time. Stay tuned!
