5 minutes with: Award winning AFL journalist Sam McClure

It wasn’t that long ago Sam McClure was running errands and buying coffee for on-air talent at a local Melbourne radio station. Fast forward to 2017 and the award-winning journalist got his next break, when he joined 1116 SEN’s weekday breakfast show. Sam has an inherit flair for footy and journalism, his father Geoff McClure was a renowned sports journalist at The Age. Also writing for The Age, he radiates enthusiasm for his craft of storytelling and those aspiring to break into the industry can certainly learn a thing or two from him. It’s hard to believe Sam was only 25-years-old when…

Behind the scenes: 2017 AFL Grand Final

As a die-hard Crows supporter I’ve always maintained the belief that the last thing I would want in footy would be to LOSE a Grand Final. Well… turns out that happened. Almost a year ago to the day. It still stings, particularly after a disappointing 2018 season. But now with a new finals story being written it’s a little bit easier to leave the heartache of the 2017 AFL Grand Final behind. I faced the day in an unique predicament as the lead social media content curator for the AFL at the ground. I was so excited going into the…

Behind the scenes: 2016 AFL Grand Final

It was never supposed to happen. They weren’t even meant to make it over their first finals hurdle, let alone win the whole thing. But the Western Bulldogs did. There are so many facets to this football fairytale that it’s hard to know where to begin. I was fortunate to follow the Bulldogs throughout their 2016 AFL Finals journey as I travelled around Australia to provide at-ground coverage on the AFL’s social media channels. The start of September From day dot on a balmy Thursday night in Perth, where they knocked off the fancied West Coast Eagles, right through to the first Saturday in October where so…

Behind the scenes: 2018 AFLX Tournaments

Ah AFLX… the much discussed variation of Australian Rules Football made its long-awaited debut last month in Adelaide. The hybrid game then travelled onto Melbourne before culminating in Sydney in what was a marathon three-day three-tournament series. It was certainly an unusual experience going in completely blind. It’s one thing knowing footy inside out but throw in a rectangular field, silver Sherrins and Zooper goals into the mix and it’s a whole different story. No one really knew what to expect! Call me bias but I like it. It has a place in the pre-season and I can see the…

Behind the scenes: 2017 AFL season, Round 1-22

So that’s the 2017 AFL season in the bag, and what an epic year it was. From the start of February, with the first ever AFL Women’s Competition, right through to the last Saturday in September – or late October if you’re counting the Trade Period too – this season has been one rollercoaster of a ride I’ll never forget. When you live, breath and work footy that equates to roughly eight straight months anticipating, absorbing and analysing the weekend’s results. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s fair to say now games are done and dusted, Saturdays…

Behind the scenes: 2017 AFL Women’s Competition

Life changing. How else do you describe the inaugural NAB AFL Women’s Competition? Especially for women and girls Australia wide. What once started out as a pipe dream became a long-awaited reality when Carlton and Collingwood took to a packed Princes Park on Friday February 3, 2017. From there the first women’s season continued to smash all expectations, before culminating in a thrilling grand final finish on the Gold Coast. Since then we’ve seen a Best & Fairest crowned and the first women’s State of Origin match. I was closely involved in covering AFLW’s inception through my social media role…

News: My new role at the AFL

So after six years with the AFL social media team I’m thrilled to be signing on full time as Social Audience Lead – AFL. It’s really a long and hard-fought dream come true! In a nutshell, I’ll be further running the AFL social media accounts and stepping up in terms of my responsibilities. My role will continue to grow and develop overtime as our team and broader department goes through some structural changes. In my previous positions I was either employed casually or on a contract basis so to now have a permanent position is a huge relief for me!…
